INTERVIEW:
Hey, Miley! What have you learned from your success story and what advice would you give to someone who wants to get into showbiz?
“Well, I think people in my life have seen a dramatic change in who I am and how I’ve gotten to know myself more and more. WHen I had my first record, I was 12 years old, so I don’t think anyone really knows who they are at that age. I definitely didn’t know myself, so I’d tell that someone, make sure you know who you are before you go into an industry and make sure you’re strong.”
You caused a sensation when, despite having millions of followers, you closed your Twitter account. What was that all about?
“Yeah, people are still freaking out about it! Twitter’s an interesting concept to me cause I’m always hearing people being like, ‘You know it’s really hard, I don’t have a private life…’ and I’m like, ‘Well, you didn’t have to tell everyone that you were doing your nails at this moment or you’re at the grocery store. You chose to tell people that’. So I felt like I was one of those people who was never private.”
You’re not afraid of telling people what you think, are you?
“I never regret what I say. I guess when I speak my opinion, if I’m asked, then I’ll tell you. I’m not gonna be like ‘Er, I don’t know…’ just cause I want to please everyone. You can’t please everyone. I’m sure what I’m saying now won’t please everybody but that’s what I think and that’s how I feel.”
You’re starting a new chapter in your career – what can we expect from you?
“I’m doing a movie called LOL – Laughing Out Loud with Demi Moore. That’s what I’m really looking forward to. I’m really, really excited. Every day, I’m counting down waiting for it.”
Your performance at the Teen Choice Awards 2009 was criticised for being too saucy – what do you say to that?
“My job is to be a role model and that’s what I want to do, but my job isn’t to me a parent. My job isn’t to tell people’s kids how to act or how not to act because I’m still figuring that our for myself. So, to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Kids are going to make mistakes anyway, whether I do or not. That’s just life.”
Your image has changed and become a lot sassier too – what’s behind that?
“I think I’ve just been able to grow up so much as an artist and as a person. Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot more about myself, who I am in style… I also get to try on so many different things for all kinds of shoots. If you try so many different attitudes with everything you do, you just realise who you are and who you are not a bit quicker, I think.”
You have a tattoo over your heart that reads “Just Breathe”. We’ve heard it’s in memory of three people who were close to you who passed away. Is that true?
“It reminds me not to take things for granted. Breathing was something none of them could do, the most basic thing, and I put the tattoo near my heart, cause that is where they’ll always be.”
You met the Queen after the Royal Variety Performance in 2009 – what was that like?
“There were a lot of rules. I was very nervous so I can’t really remember them all now, but it was like, ‘You can’t speak unless you’re spoken to’. So I was like ‘Oh my God, I’m from Teennessee, you guys! We’re like big huggers – y’know, that kind of family!’ And you don’t do that kinda thing with the Queen!”
What did she say to you?
“[Puts on a posh English accent] ‘Extravagant performance!’ Something like that, but I can’t do the accent!”
You seem so confident – is there anything you’re insecure about?
“I used to ask everyone all day, ‘Do I look pretty?’ I probably asked that question about as many times as I blink. But then I just got over it. It’s not cause I started feeling beautiful, it’s just because I was more comfortable. I became so used to the paparazzi and the cameras and the ‘What are you wearing’ and having people stare at me.”
One final question… The title of your current album is Can’t Be Tamed. Do you think there’s anything about you that needs to be tamed?
“Not right now, but we’ll see! Haha!”
