If pro sports are maybe the last bastion of supporting gay participants or gay marriage, country music can’t be too far above it. So it’s noteworthy when Carrie Underwood, one of the queens of country music, and known devout Christian, expresses her support for gay marriage.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry. I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love,” Underwood tells U.K. newspaper The Independent.

She continues, “Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

In response to the interview, fellow singer Miley Cyrus tweets, “I think it would be amazing if @carrieunderwood posed for @NOH8Campaign Would be wonderful to get that kinda support from country music!”

Miley, of course, grew up in the country music world after her dad Billy Ray shot to stardom in the early 1990s with “Achy-Breaky Heart.”

Openly-gay country singer Chely Wright echoes Miley’s sentiments, “That would be AWESOME, @MileyCyrus !! @carrieunderwood @noh8campaign.”

So far, Carrie has not responded to the tweets – her account has been quiet for a couple days, though.
